Shelby County Texas Historical Society.

The Shelby County TX Historical Commission seeks out people, places, and events that have and or will impact our community. By preserving these memories we not only make them available for future generations to enjoy, we will preserve the very history of our county. Understanding that if history is not recorded and preserved on the local level it will not be recorded on a national or world wide scale.

Historical Monuments

Shelby County was established in 1836, and for the next 30 years Shelbyville was the county seat. R.L. Parker, who was county clerk in 1866, decided that the county seat should be in the “center” of the county. That same year, the state legislature passed an act requiring counties to have centrally located seats.
